Ivanka Trump was accosted by a fiery passenger spouting anti-Trump rhetoric on a flight from New York’s John F. Kennedy airport today. According to TMZ, the embattled future First Daughter was onboard a JetBlue flight with her three children when a man began screaming, “Your father is ruining the country,” and, “Why is she on our flight? She should be flying private.” The anti-Trump passenger, who was holding a child, was promptly removed by officials. The man’s husband had reportedly tweeted earlier from the airport: “Ivanka and Jared at JFK . . . flying commercial. My husband chasing them down to harass them.” Ivanka is said to have ignored the man, focusing instead on distracting her children with crayons.
It’s just the latest in backlash against Ivanka, who has repeatedly declared herself just “a daughter” with no official political role in the Trump administration, while simultaneously sitting in on her father’s meetings and phone calls with foreign leaders (and Silicon Valley executives) and reportedly weighing a move to Washington (and an office in the White House). The art community recently staged a protest outside Ivanka’s New York penthouse, an extension of the Dear Ivanka Instagram account run by the Halt Action Group, formed by curator Alison Gingeras, dealer Bill Powers, and artist Jonathan Horowitz, calling on Ivanka to stand up to her father’s racist and misogynistic administrative appointments. Bloomberg noted this week that rising art star Alex Da Corte recently commented: “Dear @Ivankatrump, please get my work off of your walls. I am embarrassed to be seen with you.”
Earlier this year, a boycott against Ivanka Trump’s eponymous fashion and accessories brand erupted on Twitter, urging women to protest with their wallets and stop shopping at retailers that sell her line, including Macy’s, Nordstrom, Amazon, Marshalls, and Zappos. “The beauty of America is that people can do what they like, but I prefer to talk to the millions, tens of millions of American women, who are inspired by the brand and the message that I’ve created,” Ivanka said in response. She has gone on to distance herself from her namesake brand.
For those holding out hope that Ivanka will emerge the voice of reason in her father’s administration, it may be time to give up. Ivanka doesn’t appear to be distancing herself from her father’s administration any time soon: President-elect Donald Trump had initially said Ivanka, and his sons Eric and Donald, Jr., would run the Trump Organization during his presidency; last week, after canceling a press conference meant to address concerns about conflicts between Trump’s business and his presidency, he said only his sons would be at the helm.
